Platform engineering turns architectural decisions into an environment teams can deploy, operate, and recover. The path starts with declared resources and state, continues with delivery of identifiable artifacts, and keeps security and cost as verifiable contracts.

These four notes connect design and operations without assuming that a tool eliminates system failures.

A preparation path

  • PE: Terraform — modules, remote state, locking, and infrastructure change review with explicit permissions and recovery.
  • PE: CI and CD: Blue-Green — immutable artifacts, tests, OIDC, traffic switching, and rollback boundaries.
  • PE: AWS Security: IAM and KMS — identity, authorization, encryption, and auditing without conflating permission boundaries.
  • PE: FinOps — consumption units, pricing assumptions, budgets, and capacity decisions related to cost.

Connect with system decisions

Docker helps reason about the artifact being built and run. API Design distinguishes the contract verified before and after a release. Data Modeling helps assess which schema changes are compatible with two application versions during a transition.

In Message Queues, work capacity and recovery depend on more than the number of workers. The platform needs to observe dependency limits and preserve explainable states when a release fails.

The path complements System Design and the axes of Systems Lab: decide which guarantee is needed, identify who enforces it, and verify it through evidence.
