A node is useful only if kubelet can keep reporting health and can ask the container runtime to run Pods.
Notes
- kubelet watches PodSpecs assigned to the node and makes local reality match them.
- kube-proxy or a replacement dataplane handles service traffic rules.
- Node conditions are early warning signals: disk pressure, memory pressure, and network readiness matter.
Homelab Angle
Treat each node like cattle with a notebook: reproducible install, known labels, and a clear drain/replace path.
Verify It
- Read the object status before changing the manifest.
- Check events for the controller or node that is actually complaining.
- Confirm the official source linked below still matches the cluster version you run.
Common Failure Modes
- Treating the YAML object as the system, instead of one input to a reconciliation loop.
- Debugging from outside the cluster when the failure only exists inside cluster networking or node state.
- Forgetting that Kubernetes version, addon version, and runtime behavior are linked.
